Andrew Sheng- The movie Tsunami

The movie Tsunami: Killer Waves was published in 2005 by national geographic. Tsunamis are multiple waves made up of large amounts of water, and are caused by earthquakes, and other disruptions of the water. One belief held by scientist is that a meteor could fall into the ocean and create a 100 foot or higher wave.  As it title states, it is about tsunamis, it describes how destructive they are, and who they have affected and what damages they caused people.
One place that experienced a tsunami is Crescent City, which is located in California. Eleven people were killed in this tsunami and caused seven million dollars in damages. People of the city said "Water kept coming".  After this tsunami, it was now understood that a tsunami could happen anywhere. Although the people of Crescent City know that it is possible for a tsunami to happen where they live, they still have made very little changes, and it is very possible that this city could be devastated just as bad as they were before, maybe even worst. Another location a tsunami happened in the United States was in Laupahoehoe in Hawaii. This tsunami affected students and teachers. The waves were a hundred feet or higher. Twenty-five people were killed. Hawaii is now the location of Tsunami Warning Center, which provides information about earthquakes that could from tsunamis.
Another nation that has been greatly affected by the Tsunamis is Japan. One city in Japan that encountered a Tsunami was Hilo, where property was destroyed, including homes and business as well, it also took the lives of Hilo citizens. Another place was Okushiri, where two-hundred people died, and only rubble remained where many houses were once standing. Unfortunately many of the victims who died in this tsunami were children and other young people. All accounts of this tsunami were told by Heriosha Nakamara. In 1933 the city of Taro was greatly affected by a tsunami. Three-thousand people were killed, which happen to be one-fourth of their population. It left the city in ruins, which enacted Taro to create their own Tsunami Warning Center.
Subduction zones found in Cascadia is thought to have encountered and created tsunamis. Scientists believe that this area creates earthquakes, and that it could form a tsunami in twenty minutes. That destruction from it has created ghost forests and swamp marshes. Oregon has created zones for tsunami safety, cannon beach zone which is anything within three hundred feet within the shore. Other places have also taken measures against tsunamis, such as building giant walls which they practice closing and even time themselves to make sure they are will be safe if a tsunami does happen. Some schools near the ocean have drill for tsunamis which is similar to fire drills except after being underneath a desk they have to hike up a hill to where they are at a higher and safer area. Even thought we now prepare for tsunamis in all different ways, there is still very little known about them.
Tsunamis are still very mysterious, and only a few scientists have observed them. Tsunamis are so destructive, they affect many people from all over the world, and they destroy properties and even take lives. Scientists are saying that the question is "not if, but when" the next tsunami will happen. This film gave a great representation of how killer these waves we call tsunamis can really be.

  1. Tsunamis I have heard of the damaged they caused somewhat heard of but I liked all the information that you provided because these natural disasters are really horrible and the damage they cause is worse. I liked that you did your history on where they Tsunamis have hit because I didn’t know they had hit California before so it was surprising to hear. After reading your blog it got me interested on the movie because most things you wrote I had no idea about and it is really a sad tragedy. Especially that they can come unexpectedly without giving a warning, so to hear there are Warning Centers is comforting to know. I don’t know if I read it wrong and missed your argument, but it was really good written and you did a great job.
